It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of Ann Widdecombe.
Only a short time ago, many of us in Bexhill and Battle had the privilege of meeting Ann when she visited Sussex for a Reform UK evening with members. Seeing her in person reminded us all why she had become such a respected and recognisable figure in British politics. She was generous with her time, spoke with warmth and humour, and remained as passionate about the future of our country as ever.
For me, Ann represented something far greater than simply a politician. She was one of the most formidable women in modern British public life. Long before it was common to see women in senior political roles, Ann had already shown that determination, conviction and integrity could overcome barriers. She never felt the need to change who she was to fit the expectations of others. Instead, she built a reputation for speaking honestly, standing firmly by her principles, and never being afraid to challenge the political establishment.
She inspired countless women to become involved in politics, proving that public service is about character, courage and commitment rather than conforming to stereotypes. Whether people agreed with her views or not, there was widespread respect for her authenticity and her willingness to defend what she believed was right.
Those who met Ann recently in Sussex will remember her kindness, her wit and the genuine interest she took in speaking with members. It is a memory that we will now treasure even more.
The news of her death has come as a profound shock. Our thoughts are with Ann’s family, her friends and everyone across Reform UK who had the privilege of working alongside her.
As we mourn her loss, we also recognise that many questions remain about the circumstances surrounding her death. We hope that, in the coming days, the police investigation will help establish exactly what happened and provide the clarity and answers that her family, friends and the wider public deserve.
Ann Widdecombe dedicated her life to public service and to the causes she believed in. She leaves behind a remarkable legacy and an example of courage, independence and principled leadership that will continue to inspire future generations.
